YMGCR BowlsOn Tuesday the club had the annual visit from the Belmont BC, in cold and windy conditions 60 brave players tried to tame the testing elements. Some did and some didn’t, a fun time was had by all followed by a tasty lunch.
On a fantastic autumn day for Wednesday bowls, the club had 18 bowlers (great work to Bill Butterworth for changing the game to triples).
Winners for the day were Peter Lidgerwood, brother Robert and the major (making his comeback) Peter Wallis. Runners-up were Greg Green, a visitor from Sale Austin Edwards and Danny McNeill. The jackpot failed to go off thanks mainly to Kerry Kinnane, Doug Metier and John Banger, they lost by 34 shots over only 24 ends.
Friday winners were Ray and Rhonda Irvine and the runners-up Ross Lloyd and Ian Cummings. The jackpot was shared between Daryl and Betty Richmond and Greg Green and the Cat.
The Corowa Ladies Invitation 4 was held last week with Anne Miles, Claire Sanders, Marika Armstrong (from Shep Park) and ClubMulwala’s Laureen Smith winning 6 out of 6 and 66 shots up. With a score like that you would pretty confident of a win, but they could only manage an honourable second.
This week the report writer had a pleasant talk with the club’s one and only life member Ben Nowell.
Walking to his front door it seemed ironic that here was the club’s original greenkeeper with an artificial grass lawn. Perhaps it saves wife Myra from mowing? Ben assures us it was due to the drought.
Ben, who was originally from Camperdown, moved to the area in the 50s with a supermarket chain and later falling for a young Yarra lass, brought a small mixed business with his wife.
After her death, Ben then got a what he thought was a temporary job on the golf course(1959).
He then did training in Sydney and even the USA, Ben was head supervisor when the Murray course was constructed. Ben would spend half his week on the golf course and the other on working on the bowls green, he was the greenkeeper for 15 years.
The original bowls green was constructed where the current gym is now located, it was then relocated to where the current green is now (the 2nd green was constructed in 1962).
Ben had a house in Hovel street which he was knocking down, that’s where he meet his new love Myra (they met over the fence and the rest is history).
Ben has served on the Board of Directors of the golf club for 12 years, been Bowls President and general committee for 18 years, no wonder he became a life member in 1995. He started his bowls career in 1987, had a few night bowls and then was thrust into pennant.
Ben played his one and only game in the top side at Myrtleford (a late withdrawal saw him promoted, he reckons no one else wanted to travel). He has been bowling ever since and 4 years ago he started to use his bowling arm.
Ben is a true icon of the club and when he has something to say everyone listens, he is the person all go to when they have questions about the club history.
