Cr Peter Mansfield was chosen by unanimous vote at the recent ordinary meeting of Moira Shire Council to be Chair of Region 2 of the Murray Darling Association.
In a report to council and endorsed by CEO Mark Henderson it said the purpose of the Murray Darling Association was to “provide effective representation of Local Government and the communities the association represents, at state and federal level in the management of the Murray Darling Basin resources”.
“Local government, as the third level of government in Australia and the one most directly connected to communities, must have an active role in the decision making processes that inform the development of policy and the implementation of the Basin Plan,” the report said.
“This is essential if we are to see the stated objectives achieve, including the commitments to water recoveries and to neutral or beneficial social and economic impacts.
“The key to this is ensuring strong regional leadership and local knowledge to inform decisions across the basin, particularly from the chairing councils.”
Cr Peter Lawless moved the recommendation to endorse Cr Mansfield as chair and it was seconded by Cr Wendy Buck.
Cr Lawless said Cr Mansfield had displayed to council his great passion for Murray Darling Basin affairs.
“Cr Mansfield has the skills to push our agenda and we will be well represented,” he said.
Cr Buck concurred saying “Peter will be an excellent worker and it is wonderful the Murray Darling Association has chosen a Moira representative to chair Region 2”.
Cr Bourke also spoke for the endorsement saying he recognised the impact the Murray Darling Basin Plan would have on the local community.
“Too much or not enough is always the problem and Cr Mansfield will be very proactive,” Cr Bourke said.
Cr Mansfield thanked his fellow councillors for the endorsement.
“Rest assured I will be giving it my best shot,” Cr Mansfield said.
“I will put the Murray Darling Association, and Moira Shire, front and centre in future negotiations.”
