When it comes to old fashioned country tennis with a family atmosphere and friendly environment, look no further than the Wilby and District Tennis Association (WDTA).
For many decades now local district teams on both sides of the Murray River have formed to make up the WDTA season of social tennis over the summer months. This coming season, eight teams will play on either Friday nights or Saturday afternoons.
Association President, John Wright said he is very much looking forward to the coming season but is encouraging more players to join as there a couple of teams still looking for players.
“I can’t wait to get back on the court after a long winter,” he told the Chronicle last week after the association’s Annual General Meeting.
“Wilby tennis is just such a great way to have a hit of tennis and also catch up with many people from the area that you don’t otherwise see,” he said.
This year, Wilby Tennis will start on October 13 and 14 (the weekend after the ‘Yarrawonga Show’). Play will continue to mid-December, and then there will be an extended break over Christmas and the January school holidays.
John said the summer break over January has been extended to help club captains fill their team in the post-Christmas period.
“While we have lots of people wanting to play in the Wilby comp a few times a year, sometimes team captains have trouble filling their sides.
“This can be a particular problem after Christmas, when families are away for holidays, so we have tried to make it easier by not resuming tennis post-Christmas, until early February.
“More generally, team captains would love to have a few more names to add to their team lists to help the comp remain strong into the future,” he said.
So whether you are keen to play most weeks or just every now and then, the Wilby comp would love to hear from you. If you are interested in playing in the competition contact John Wright on 0400182553 or get in touch via the WDTA Facebook page.
