Jay Ar Martin has been formally announced Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort A Grade Club Champion for 2017, for the ninth time - just one shy of Gary Page’s 10 titles.
The 33-year-old groundskeeper from Black Bull Golf Course at Silverwoods took home some big trophies from the club resort’s Christmas party and presentation night on Sunday, December 3.
Besides being named club champion, Jay Ar won the Foursomes title with Peter Warner, and the Mixed Foursomes with Georgia Macklin.
He was proud of his 2017 and said his other prizes were all his family. “I thank my family, my Mum and Dad for all their support, my wife Joy,” he said.
“To the members for the support you’ve given me throughout the years, thank you. Thank you to ‘Macca’ (Alex MacKenzie - see separate story). The Board of Directors are doing a great job, Richard (CEO Richard) Hogg’s team is fantastic, Burgo (Course Superintendent Chris Burgess) - the course is always in immaculate condition and Evan’s (Evan Droop) Pro Shop team - you all do a fantastic job.”
After the presentations, Jay Ar made his intentions clear to the Yarrawonga Chronicle. “I still want that 10th (club champion title) one!”
Club resort president Gil Cunningham welcomed the crowd of 125 people. “It’s great to see so many people here, compared to last year,” he said.
“In celebrating Christmas, on behalf of the board, the CEO and his staff, and the Pro Shop team, I wish you a very, very safe and merry Christmas.
“We appreciate your attendance at functions like this which help make this club special.”
Other stars of the night included B Grade Club Champion Darren McGrillen who credited Pro Shop chief Evan Droop for clinching that and other trophies.
Immediate past CEO Rob Dick was C Grade Club Champion and collected other prizes.
Young guns Ben Casley and Baxter Droop are impressive on and off the field, especially when they strode to centre stage with their bow ties.
Frazer Droop, who turned 21-years-of age on Tuesday, December 5, attended the big night after his big Australian Open and PGA Championship events.
The star first year trainee professional described his time at the two huge events to the Yarrawonga Chronicle as “unbelievable experience” and at the PGA Championships in Queensland found himself chipping on the practice fairway alongside Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia and Marcus Fraser.
Off the Tee
On Tuesday the 6th round of midweek pennant was played. In Open 1 the YMGCR 1 team having several players away for the match were up against the reining premiers Benalla, the job was going to be tough.
The troops put up a brave showing going down 2/57 to Benalla 12/76. Greg Green went down 16/27 , Laureen Smith losing 18/29 and with Kay Beare taking on the skippers role coming out with a fantastic win 23/20. Losing players from the top team then puts pressure on all the lower teams.
The other Open 1 team travelled to Corowa Services and got beaten 2/42 to 12/65 with Bob Adams rink having a gutsy win 16/15, Tony Durkin going down 14/25 and Bob Evans losing 12/25.
The A3 team had a great game playing Wodonga away losing 3/59 to 11/60, Bob Liddell winning 22/18, Les Balfour having a draw 20/20 and Siggi Rempal losing 17/22 (great effort by our top of the table side) The Open 4 team played Wareena Park and walked away winning 12/71 to 2/62, Peter Bellis winning 22/17 , Robyn Balfour winning 30/16 and Carolyn Boston losing 19/29.
Due to the heavy rain Saturdays Pennant was washed out.
Just to update a bit of housekeeping from the Victorian Open, the ladies once again having a great tournament with Claire Sanders making the final 16 in the singles, Anne Miles making the last 32. Anne and Claire were then joined by Laureen Smith in the triples and made the final 16.
The men were represented with Garry Sanders making it to the last 32 and Peter Velardo made it to the last 64 in the singles. Claire and Garry then played in the mixed pairs and finished in the last 16. Well done to all our team mates on representing YMGCR and performing at such a high level.
Last week Anne, Claire, Shirley Hummel were joined by Kylie Whitehead from Wodonga to play in the National Championships in Merimbula. Unfortunately the girls lost their first game by 1 and then lost the second to put them out of the event. But, all was not lost as they then hit the beaches to work on their sun tans. YMGCR would like to congratulate Wodonga’s Kylie Whitehead on winning the National Singles final.
