Local identity Debbie Van Corler was left surprised and humbled on November 25 during a trivia night at the Lions clubrooms when proceedings were interrupted so she could be awarded with a prestigious leadership award.
Past District Governor Peter Poels stopped the proceedings to announce he had a presentation to give and after explaining the reason for the prestigious award he then called on Debbie to receive it.
The medal is a leadership award presented by International President for 2016 and 2017 Chancellor Bob Corlew for Debbie’s outstanding leadership in establishing the Made With Love free chemotherapy turbans project.
The Turban Angel Project has been a tremendous success and is now the flagship project of the Lions Club of Yarrawonga.
To date the angels have sewn over 13,000 turbans which are distributed to oncology units throughout the country and bring a little bit of joy to those who are going through a very difficult time.
The project started from humble beginnings with a couple of ladies sewing the turbans in the Lions clubrooms and packing everything away when they were finished for the day to now where they have their own room set up specifically for the project which has been driven mainly by Debbie’s persistence and leadership.
