Federation Council is expected to pay a recruitment agency up to $100,000 on its quest for a permanent general manager to replace Chris Gillard who left last November.
That figure is additional to the undisclosed payout to Mr Gillard.
An extraordinary council meeting was called on Thursday, February 8 where a recommendation was passed to appoint Cr Norm Wales and Cr Bronwyn Thomas to join the seven other councillors on a committee that will be involved in the recruitment of the new general manager.
Federation Council Acting General Manager, Adrian Butler was not present at the meeting but is likely to be one of the candidates for the permanent position after returning to council after the departure of Mr Gillard last year.
A recruitment agency is expected to be announced by the end of March and the successful applicant declared late May.
Following the engagement of a recruitment service provider, the service provider will be required to facilitate a workshop with council to discuss council’s strategic direction, structure and culture to determine the selection criteria for the position and to inform the general manager’s position description.
Once the position description is finalised, the selection panel (including the recruitment service provider) will evaluate the position description in terms of salary to reflect the responsibilities of the position.
The recruitment committee met for the first time on February 20.
Cr Paul Miegel was the only councillor to comment during the special meeting.
He said the general manager search would be one of the most important tasks facing the new council.
“We are all keen to try and get the best person available,” Cr Miegel said.
“As they say the best committees are (made up of) three and it works best when two don’t turn up.
“We are pretty used to meeting fairly frequently now and if we can massage this into existing meeting structures we can minimise the disruption to councillors and staff alike.
“It is a position that needs to be filled in a timely manner.”
While the council was being run in administration by Mike Eden, Mr Gillard’s contract was extended to 2020.
Mr Gillard was made interim general manager at the time of the merger between Corowa and Urana shires in 2016 while Mr Butler was named interim deputy general manager.
Mr Butler was later made a director before quitting and then returning to Federation late last year.
