Hoppers mauled by Dogs

by
June 06, 2018

An insipid Rennie senior team went down by 64 points at Strathmerton.

The Hoppers kicked 2 goals for the match on a lovely day for footy with Strathmerton kicking goals in the first and final terms.

In between Strathy dominated in all facets of the game as Rennie could find no cohesion, their workrate was below expectation and their lack of ability to stop their opponents run and spread from half back was evident.

Apart from Beams being lively as a hit up forward, Forsyth marking well at half back and coach Ednie getting some clearances there were very few positives for the Hoppers.

Reserves

Strathmerton 1.1-7 def by Rennie 15.9-99.

The ressies had a great day winning by 92. They won all four quarters with multiple goalkickers being Jack Welsh 3 and 2 each to Nick Soutter, Garner, Boulton, Wolfe and Bruce.

Everyone played their role starting with the energiser bunny McBurnie in the guts, Bruce and Dishot dominant on the wings and the evergreen Wolfe who provides a calmness and quality. Couple more wins and the Hoppers will be in finals contention.

Awards: Cellarbrations - George McBurnie, Hicks Butchery - Leon Wolfe,Yarrawonga Hotel - Denver Bruce, Lake Mulwala Bakery - Andrew Dishot, Club Mulwala - Ryan Burns.

Goals: Jack Welsh 3, Nick Soutter 2, Zac Garner 2, Daniel Boulton 2, Leon Wolfe 2, Ryan Burns 1, Denver Bruce 2, Andrew Dishot 1.

Best: George McBurnie, Denver Bruce, Leon Wolfe, Jack Welsh, Daniel Boilton, Ryan Burns.

Under 17

Strathmerton 2.2-14 def by Rennie 12.5-77.

Massive win by the thirds who dominated a previously undefeated opponent to win by 63.

This was a team effort. The marking and defensive work of Soutter was awesome, Benjamin and Levesque provided the run and creativity, Donovan was impassable at half back, Thomas and Fisher were like the Kray brothers taking no prisoners, and up forward Tom Kennedy with 4.

McLennan and Woodward completed the work of their up field teammates.

Hoppers now third on the ladder.

Goals: Tully Woodwood 2, Tom Kennedy 4, Sam Thomas 2, Lach McLennan 2, Alex Lovell 1, Josh McInnes 1.

Best: Tom Kennedy, Hugh Levesque, Alex Lovell, Sam Thomas, Jack Kennedy, Luch McLennan.

Under 14

Strathmerton 0 0-0 def by Rennie 17.19-121.

The fourths were again excellent winning by 20 goals.

But coach Stephens will be giving his boys goalkicking practice this week as too many easy shots for goal were missed.

Multiple goals were kicked with 3 each to James, Bennett, Watson and 2 each to Kennedy and Bassett. Good job to Axel Doherty who snagged his first goal for the club and was named best player.

At 7 and 1 the fourths are flying but need to continue to gel as a team to go deep into finals.

Goals: Ben Kennedy 2, Jack James 3, Jack Bassett 2, Fraser Bennet 3, Avel Doherty 1, Xavier Watson 3, Harry Nagle 1, Dom McInness 1, Lochie Forge 1.

Best: Jack James, Fraser Bennett, Ben Kennedy, Lochie Forge, Luke Phillips, Asel Doherty.

Under 11s

The under 11’s again had a good game with the Strathmerton boys and Hunter Lonergan playing well.

Thanks to Club Mulwala for providing a great venue for the ball last Saturday night and a great job was done by Lisa Starr in the organisation.

Also to Paula and Cyndi for their work on the raffle with Nick Russo winning the major prize.

Congratulations to Jarryd Fountain who played his 100th senior game last week. Founto is a best and fairest winner, and a premiership captain. A great bloke who busts his gut each week for the club.
