YMGCR Bowls

On Thursday the OandM over 60’s ladies and men’s pairs were played and what a great result for the club.
At ClubMulwala where the ladies were strutting their stuff, 13 teams were broken into 3 sections and past champs in Anne Miles and Yarrawonga’s new recruit Caroline Reilly won their section, but the big result was still to come!
YMGCR pair of Marie Morffew and Pam Dodman (who will now be known as the “Giant Killers”) took on two of the stronger teams in Benalla’s Kerri Leask and our own Sue Middleton and the other being Yackandandah’s Mary Tragardh and Myrtleford’s Cheryl Lewis.
To show what a great effort our girls produced, these 4 ladies have all played a lot of representative bowls for the OandM region.
The “Giant Killers” didn’t have to rely on other results, they just went through undefeated. Their next game will be played on January 21 and their opponents will be a team from Wodonga and they will go in with a lot of confidence and belief.
The winner will then play Anne in the final in the afternoon. Marie has put in a lot of practice on a Sunday and with great coaching has stepped up to a new level both in Weekend and Midweek Pennant, just goes to show if you put the time in the results will come.
There were 3 teams in the Men’s section which was played at YMGCR and 1 local team got through to the next round. Well done Doddy and Doc Martin who had to beat another YMGCR team of Peter Velardo and Garry Sanders to win the section.
The third team of Greg Green and Ray Irvine lost on the last end to the section winners from Wangaratta.
On Friday the first semifinal of the men’s singles was played and in an epic battle Garry Sanders beat Peter Velardo 25 to 23. The LeFevre’s are still to play.
Wednesday Social bowls had 16 bowlers with the winners being the only 2 game winners in Don Tipping and Bob “ Bucks” Brokenshire (come on Don, come back and play pennant) with a +25, runners up with a win and a draw was Cat and Vikki Withers.
Yarrawonga Bowls
Last Sunday, a long awaited Wake (due to Covid restrictions) was held for Bob Jeffcott; a life member and popular member of our club.
There was a good attendance with Bob’s family members, Bridge Club members, YBC members and friends. A great spread of food was enjoyed by all.
Thank you to those that supplied food and helped out in any way.
Congratulations to Tyson Cromie (one of the younger members) on being picked for the Pathways Jackaroo Squad. Apparently, this is a squad to develop the talent of bowlers which down the track, may go on to the emerging Jackaroos, and then the Australian Jackaroos.
The club wish Tyson well in his future bowling career.
Some members are playing in the State events being held in Warrnambool this week. We wish them well, Good Bowling to all.

ClubMulwala Outdoor Bowls
Welcome to 2021 and the hope that the negativity of the previous year is put behind us.
Pennant will have commenced again with the midweek competition starting on January 12.
This game against Corowa Civic started early at 9.15am because of the expected heat and members should keep an eye on the notice board for other changes that may occur as a result of the rising temperatures in the coming weeks.
The club celebrated the end of the first half of the season on December 20 with a bbq which was cooked to perfection by intrepid chefs Russell Cook and Phil Norwood who always put up their hands when a function of this type is held.
The area was set up by Graeme Arnold, Cliffy Morton and Kerry Merrett prior to their departure for their respective away games. Their efforts are most appreciated.
The club had great support from Wade McPherson with a voucher and wine from Burramine Homstead, Jack Jarden with a Joy Flight Voucher, Yarrawonga Fresh with a wonderful box of fresh fruit and vegetables, Wades Bundalong Café with a voucher and Club Mulwala with vouchers.
A quiz game was held by elder statesman Tom Lang with prizes given away for correct answers and minor arguments on who buzzed first.
All who attended had a great time and it as a good way to see out an exhaustive and challenging 2020.

Profile: There are a number of members around the club who put in a lot of time and effort to ensure that the activities conducted are well prepared for.
We would like to acknowledge the efforts put in by Cliff Morton who invests a lot of his personal time in the club even in areas where he has no elected responsibility.
Cliff has been in the Yarrawonga/Mulwala area for around 40 years and a member of the Club for four years. He knows everyone which is handy when something is needed and has a great work ethic when it comes to activity preparation.
He is normally one of the first at the greens to set up and always assists with the take down after the day’s activities are complete.
Cliff is an excellent Club Member and a wonderful example to us all. Thank you mate.
