The Yarrawonga Pigeons’ Youth Girls were overrun by a well-prepared Lavington Panthers team on Sunday.

Many of the girls were making their first trip to the large Lavington Sportsground and the Pigeons’ young side was left flat-footed as Lavington quickly took advantage of the home ground from the first bounce.
Annie Robilliard, Phoebe Jarrad and Trinny Preer did well to repel some of forward entries but the Panthers persistence and power-running made the scoring hard to stop. Kali Martin and Ruby Kennedy were leading and driving the ball up to the wings but with the Panthers’ spreading well the Pigeons were denied any forward entries.
Dakarrah Whitworth, Brooke Fitzpatrick and Robyn Roissetter drifted back to the backline to help slow the tempo as much of the play gathered around the Panther’s forward half.
After half time the girls stemmed the flow of goals as midfielders Evita Williams, Mia Spiteri and Ava Loughnan started to gather more of the ball sending it into the Pigeons’ forward line.
Freya Fletcher was reading the ball well, Gabby Murray and Amelia Sissons were also pressing hard.
The Pigeons’ hard work eventually paid off when Phoebe Jarrad took a strong mark after Ava Loughnan cleared the ball from edge of the center square. Phoebe Jarrad then stepped back and drilled home the Pigeons’ first and only goal of the game.
Coach Roger Robilliard said the Pigeons Youth Girls were beaten on the day by an experienced and fitter Lavington outfit and expected the girls to learn from the game and be much more prepared for the Alpine Lions at Whorouly in a couple of weeks on Sunday, April 28.
