It was goal for goal early as Harry Crossley kicked a beauty on the run for Mulwala first as both sides played attacking football.
Billy Bardon and Sean Robinson both hit the scoreboard as Mulwala were for the first time in a couple of years, accurate in front of goal.
At the other end, new recruit Reece Geary was instrumental as he used all his guise and experience to control the backline.
Lach Davis, returning after injury, was straight back to work and broke clear to kick the first of the second quarter with the Lions threatening to break the game open.
Flynn Fletcher’s lightening hands at half back led to a brilliant team goal, capped by a strong mark and long-range effort from Beau Clarke.
Clarke followed up his work with another soon after and Mulwala were away.
Sean Robinson was Dylan like at full forward and had five goals by half time.
Mulwala’s second quarter was full of run, class and exciting football.
At one end, Glenn Dominick and Tim Doyle were strong and desperate whilst Sean Johns, Jackson Gash and Liam Russell dominated through the middle.
Russell rarely gets the plaudits of his more fancied teammates but the young man is a complete player who is composed, defensive minded and does not know how to play a bad game.
Just moments before half time, Mulwala connected on several pin point passes to find Bardon right on the boundary, still fifty meters from goal.
The siren sounded and in what can only be described as pure class, the dynamic recruit put it straight through the middle.
The third quarter was largely goal for goal as Barooga punished Mulwala for any turn over.
Hamish Hosking continued to give his midfield first use with Damien Cook racking up possessions across half back.
Dylan Flanagan was in fantastic form and his strong hands throughout the contest were a real standout. Big Dizza kicked 5 goals and was close to best on ground.
Mulwala, kicking with the breeze in the last put the game to bed in the opening minute as Adam Rouel swooped on a loose ball to give Mulwala a forty-point lead.
The skill level was high all day but what would have pleased coach, Jason Sanderson, was the tackle pressure and hard running from the entire team.
Leigh Howroyd typified this and his willingness to always feedback and put his team mates into space, showcased his team first values.
Sean Robinson’s big bag of goals was capped off in the dying minutes as he landed a bomb from 55. Mulwala face the difficult task of winning all remaining games to snatch a top four spot and give themselves a genuine chance at the premiership.
Reserves
Mulwala 22.13.145 defeated Barooga 0.2.2
Mulwala have won their first game in 7 weeks with a dominate 22 goal win over Barooga.
With Barooga forced to find fill ins to provide a team, it was always going to be a one-way game and so it was from the outset as Mulwala dominated possession and trapped the ball inside forward fifty for most of the quarter.
Goals to Joe Bland and Cam Nye were enough for Mulwala to be 30 points up at quarter time but a flat football and some wayward kicking meant the game was still alive.
Much like the seniors, Mulwala’s second quarter was its best.
Seven unanswered goals put the result beyond doubt as every player contributed with some brilliant team goals.
Cam Nye was strong in the air whilst Ant Sammut racked up possessions.
His class around the stoppages was elite whilst Angus Shand returning after injury, enjoyed a free run off half back and repeatedly delivered the ball on a platter going forward.
Wade Dennis’s run off half back was also telling as the youngster bounced his way down the wing on several occasions.
Lachie Wood can pretty much play in any position and was dangerous as a forward with strong marks and forward line pressure.
The rout continued after half time, although Barooga did themselves proud and played the game out, there was little they could do with a player short and plenty of young kids on the field.
Cam Magher’s intensity was outstanding as he threw his body in and tackled as though the game was in the balance.
Vando also enjoyed his best game of the year and won his own ball and was creative with his ball use. Gathering the ball and sprinting along the wing he delivered a pin point pass onto the forward flank to show exactly how far he has come in his first two seasons of Aussie Rules football.
Beau Nixon who captained the team in absence of Nathan Beasley was superb in the ruck and his physical presence around the ground was once again crucial.
Sam Willett has been a great inclusion this year and after spending several weeks in the backline he relished a week in the forward line and was in everything at ground level.
Joe Bland had a mixed day in front of the sticks, kicking 6, with one from fifty and a sneaky dribbler from an impossible angle to go with some really handy points.
Andy Miller was strong in the air all game and kicked five goals himself as well as giving a couple off.
The reserves need to win every game from here out to try and make the 8 and at least give themselves a shot at going back to back.
