Australian Primary Hemp has praised the recent announcement by the Council of Australian Governments to permit the legalisation of hemp for consumption in Australia.
The use of hemp products has been isolated to non-food applications including the textiles, building and cosmetics industries, with Australia and New Zealand the only remaining nations to resist legalisation on the basis of food consumption.
Australian Primary Hemp director James Hood said the COAG decision was positive for farmers.
‘‘(The) COAG announcement opens the door for a whole new superfood to enter the Australian market,’’ Mr Hood said.
‘‘There is currently a huge opportunity for Australian farmers to enter both the burgeoning local and established global markets.’’
The COAG announcement allows each state to roll out legislation to align with Federal Government approval from October.
