“Any young person who has an interest in the town and sport should consider standing,” Norm told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
Norm, who turned 88-years of age at the start of 2019, enjoyed all of his time on the committee, as a football club representative. “It was great,” he said.
“It was always great because the caravan park and the footy club had to be united with one another. It was a good partnership.”
The Yarrawonga Holiday Park is, Norm said, one of the major features of the town and the sporting facilities including football, netball, athletics, swimming, tennis and canoeing are also excellent.
“The committee has a good mix of people, different ages and we’ve never had any ‘blues’,” the former stock and station agent said.
Yarrawonga Holiday Park Chairman Geoff Campbell referred to Norm’s dedication since 1984. “He was always there,” the chairman said.
“I think he might have missed only one meeting, that was to attend a wedding in Western Australia about three years ago. At meetings he’d love to reminisce about yesteryear, about the park and sporting facilities.”
Norm’s wife Joan should also be praised according to Mr Campbell for letting Norm attend all those meetings over the decades.
The McMillans have spent 50 years in Yarrawonga. Norm had good cricket and football careers, as an allrounder and rover respectively, especially in Deniliquin.
“You get satisfaction being on the holiday park committee, seeing good results,” Norm said.
So, younger people, consider standing for the committee! Meetings are only once a month, on a Friday morning at 7.00am and last a maximum of 90 minutes – by 8.30am – and quite often within the hour.
