Sturt Street Mulwala resident Denis Dowling believed kerb and guttering was to become a reality after speaking to a real estate agent.
But letters from Denis and Von Dowling to the former Corowa Shire Council and to Federation Council have not been successful.
“We wrote four letters to Corowa Shire Council without any success. We wrote to Federation Council in February but haven’t had a reply,” Mrs Dowling told the Yarrawonga Chronicle after last Wednesday’s draft budget meeting in Mulwala by Federation Council.
“Visitors who come here in cars can’t pull off the road. Water just sits here and it’s particularly bad in winter.”
Mr Dowling, who has lived in Muwala all of his 84-years, has been a ratepayer for 60 years. He raised the drainage topic at council’s draft budget meeting.
At that meeting, former long-time councilor Paul Talbot said council’s intention to have kerb and gutter for a street block every year was undertaken, with substantial kerb and gutter works in town.
“Sturt Street was supposed to be done years ago,” Mr Talbot said. “Some residents in Erne Street didn’t want the kerb and gutter.”
Federation Council’s new director engineering services Steve Carmichael said what Mulwala needs is an overall drainage plan.
“I’m not having a go at any previous council person but we do need an overall strategy. We need to tie it altogether because water doesn’t flow in some streets. There are pieces (of streets) missing (drainage wise, with no kerb and gutter).”
Council’s General Manager Adrian Butler said the matter raised by Mr Dowling will be seriously considered for inclusion in the final draft 2019/20 budget.
