Club Mulwala Outdoor Bowls/RSL Subbranch ANZAC Day Tournament
Saturday, April 24
What a wonderful day; cloudy with periods of sunshine and 84 bowlers on the greens. Does it get much better?
Well, the reason everyone were on the greens in the first place was absolutely more important than the game itself.
This was the annual ANZAC Day Tournament to honour those past and present serving members of our Armed Forces and their heroic deeds that give us the freedoms that we enjoy every day without even thinking how it came about.
The tournament this year was named ‘REMEMBER OUR HEROES’ and it is with the assistance of ClubMulwala and ClubMulwala RSL SubBranch that this most important day on the bowls calendar was able to be conducted as successfully as it turned out to be, raising much needed funds for the SubBranch Ladies Auxiliary.
The club were extremely appreciative of the President of the RSL Sub Branch Mr John Burns and two patrons for the day Mr Stan Clark OAM and Mr John Dunstan OAM taking time to speak to the competitors and assisting with the presentation of prizes at the end of the day.
The day began with a short ceremony of remembrance and the raising of the beautiful Australian National Flag.
Having set the tone of the day the competitors were ready for the start of play and the games began.
There were 3 games of 12 ends to be played and two of these were complete prior to a lunch break put on by ClubMulwala.
At the completion of the days play the presentations were made with the successful teams as follows:
Overall winners and taking out the major cash prize were an exceptional team from Wangaratta Eagles being Craig Fruend, Jodie Fruend and Ethan Fruend.
Also playing great bowls and taking out second place were Murray Reid, Wendy Watt and Graham McKinnis from the Shepparton RSL Bowls Club.
Enjoying their bowls and the after-game celebrations was a great group of people being Darren Fruend, Paul Glanvill and Rachel Head from the Berigan Bowls Club.
Best first game winners were Loris Lochhead, Mick Millsom and Barry Martin.
Best second game winners were Jan Corboy, Trevor Loe and Mark Smith (thanks for standing in guys and well done).
Best third game winners went to S. Potter, Tony Durkin and Digger Smith.
Thanks to all who participated and a special thanks must go to the representative Board Director Mr David King for his tireless work with the Bowls Club to ensure this tournament was a success.
