It is only fitting that his substantial voluntary assistance on the administration side has earned him the 2019 Godfather of the Year title.
For in 2014/15 – the year in which he took over as the association’s junior co-ordinator – the now 50-year-old’s recommendation that a Junior Godfather of the Year for top junior be introduced was accepted.
It’s something that the man popularly known as ‘Dash’ is very proud of. And even moreso when the son of Dash and Narelle, Corey, won the award for his great last season in the Under 16s in 2016/17.
Junior Cricket co-ordinator duties included registrations, selections for all teams which included association representative cricket.
For both Friday nights and Saturdays, Dash ensured grounds were set up, rooms were tidy and the refrigerator stocked with water and soft drinks.
The role was time consuming and with Dash giving 110% - working hard to ensure junior cricketers had the best of everything. Many late nights on the computer, many early mornings and many full weekends were experienced by the selfless junior co-ordinator. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
In 2016, Dash took on the association’s sponsorship role, helping with fundraising to ensure the viability of junior cricket.
Godfathers President Graham Wilson said Dash has worked tirelessly. “He’s a very worthy winner,” the president said.
“This is a bit of a shock,” the very good fast bowler of yesteryear, initially with Rennie before Wilby, Dash said.
“I am very passionate about cricket. It was a no-brainer to be involved – if you have kids you just want to be there for them.”
Dash praised the work undertaken by the Godfathers whom he described “just sensational”.
In his 23rd year as a Thales Company employee as a technical officer, Dash is a much deserved Godfather of the Year.
