Rennie got back on the winning list with a 21-point victory over last year’s grand final opponent Picola United at Rennie.
Picola kicked the first couple of goals, but this was the only time they led all match as the Hoppers clicked in the middle of the first quarter with Willett and Stevenson creating space at half forward, Kennedy getting clearances and Sudholz using his run and carry to lead by 17.
Term two saw the game fought between the arcs as neither side was able to penetrate deep into their opponent’s 50 metre area with Wolfe and Ednie repelling the Picola attacks and Welsh using his bulk well around ground.
Rennie took a 14-point lead into the long break and an early goal saw them extend with Clarke and Rae holding firm with the lead over 5 goals at the final break.
McCabe went forward to kick an early goal but a five-man Picola forward line clicked into gear and 4 goals in 7 minutes brought it back to a 2 goal game.
McCabe’s aerial ability came to the fore as a couple of marks resulted in him kicking 3 for the term and give Rennie a deserved win. Willett kicked 4 for the Hoppers.
Best were Welsh, Wolfe, Ednie and Stevenson.
