The 36-year-old defender, who has confirmed his playing career is over, had quietly settled on making this season his last and seemed on track to have one last crack at an elusive premiership after the Swans finished second on the ladder ahead of the finals.
But Sydney's premiership bid - as Swans chairman Andrew Pridham put it - was "torpedoed" after vice-captain Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon and Riley Bice were stood down.
The five were suspended from round 24 and the club's two finals for what the Swans termed a "serious breach of expected club behaviour and standards".
Those AFL-endorsed club bans were separate from a police investigation into an alleged sexual assault at the Pullman Hotel, which is ongoing.
No charges have been laid. AAP is not suggesting any wrongdoing on the part of the suspended players.
Rampe, who played in four losing grand finals (2014, '16, '22 and '24) over 289 games, confessed to his personal hurt at what happened.
The former Swans co-captain was emotional and held back tears as he announced his retirement on Friday in front of family, teammates and media.
In a telling indication of Rampe's reputation at the club, Governor-General and former Swans board member Sam Mostyn was among those at the off-season media conference.
"Deep down, I probably knew at this time last year, this was going to be my last year," Rampe said on Friday.
"Everything was going swimmingly ... and then, I'm not going to lie, the events that happened at the back end of the season really muddied those waters.
"It really threw into disarray what I was thinking, what I hadn't probably admitted to myself yet.
"Selfishly, there was part of me that felt a little bit upset and hurt by what had happened.
"I was struggling to accept whether this was the way I was going to bow out.
"And then coupled with that, was the place in which the club found itself. It didn't feel right. It didn't feel right leaving with where things are at."
Rampe said conversations with coach Dean Cox and football Leon Cameron had helped him achieve "clarity" surrounding his retirement.
He was re-drafted as a rookie this season alongside fellow defender Jake Lloyd and Cox "delicately" suggested that Rampe was struggling to meet the physical demands after 14 seasons in the system.
Unlike Rampe, Lloyd has signed on for a 15th season.
"I couldn't quite give the 100 per cent that made me Dane Rampe, the Swans player," Rampe said.
"I'm grateful for the way he (Cox) delicately posed that to me, because it was something I needed to hear.
"Given the emotions of the back end of the season, it was hard for me to see the forest from the trees."
A Swans fan who sprinted on to the SCG in 1999 after Tony Lockett broke the league's goal-kicking record, Rampe was a heart-and-soul player since drafted as a rookie in 2012, aged 22.
He made his debut in 2013 and went on to co-captain the Swans with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker from 2019 to 2023.
Rampe is a Bob Skilton Medallist (2019) as the club best and fairest and an All-Australian ('16), making him one of the club's greatest rookie-list success stories alongside childhood idol Brett Kirk.
When captain Callum Mills suffered an ACL injury last month in their semi-final win over Brisbane, it was only natural for the Swans to turn to Rampe.
Rampe would captain the Swans in what would be his final match, the club's preliminary final loss to Fremantle.
With nothing confirmed for his future besides a break from the AFL, Rampe said he leaves the club with confidence.
"I'm completely at peace with where the club sits," Rampe said.
"Does that mean that we're not going to be having robust conversations? Absolutely not.
"In fact, I hope to hear that they are having challenging conversations going forward, and that the media is reporting difficult conversations.
"That's a sign of a healthy club, a healthy culture, and I urge and implore the boys and the rest of the club to lean into that."
