Mulwala identity Rod Sissons will fly to Amsterdam later this month then embark on a 200km bike ride following the route of the Danube and Rhine Rivers.
On his 10-year-old beloved hybrid push bike, the 74-year-old retired project manager from Thales Mulwala will ride from Frankfurt to Budapest.
“I’ll average around 40 to 50kms a day, do it in the morning and pitch my tent in the afternoon and have a look at the towns,” Rod told the Yarrawonga Chronicle. “I love riding.” Riding the equivalent in distance from Mulwala to Corowa will be as easy as his bullet-like stab passes on the footy field of yesteryear.
Rod’s love of riding began in 1988 when a group of students, including Rod’s son Jeremy, embarked on the Great Victorian Bike Ride. “They wanted some parents to go and they talked me into it,” he said.
“That started the bug and the bug is still with me.” That bug has involved numerous bike rides throughout Thailand, Vietnam and Tasmania, as well as about eight Great Victorian Bike Rides.
“I’ve worn out some bikes!” the immediate past president of Lonsdale Recreation Reserve Committee said. “This is my third bike.”
Rod’s current, trusty bike will be folded up and on the airways late this month for another big trip.
