Aline Davies and Hilary Grigg understand that slow fashion is the future.

As lovers of all things fashion, and with closets always bursting at the seams, the friends needed a way to offload their pre-loved clothes without the items ending up in landfill.
“We’re both very keen shoppers,” Ms Grigg said.
“Clearly very into fashion, but we’re also very environmentally conscious and sustainability conscious.
“So when we met and realised that we lived near one another and our children were friends at kinder, we realised that a lot of our values aligned, and we wanted to create something that we believed in, which is not fast fashion.”
The two friends from Kyabram saw a lack of second-hand clothing options in Shepparton and thus decided to open their seasonal market, In My Closet.
After debuting for the spring season in October 2023, they have brought back their popular market for the summer season, taking place on Saturday, February 17.
“The first event was a big success,” Ms Davies said.
“We didn’t really know what to expect.
“You get that five minutes of a tickle in your stomach where you think, ‘Is no-one going to come?’ but people just came and looked through for the full four hours and found some great deals, which was amazing.”
What can you expect to find at In My Closet?
Ms Grigg said attendees were almost guaranteed to walk away with a bargain.
“Basically, if you’ve got clothing you want to sell, or if you’re looking for clothes for you, you’d hopefully be able to find something or sell something at the market,” she said.
Clothing for people of all ages, body types and genders will be offered, with many people already claiming a stall, including the women themselves.
“We’ll have a little cheeky stall at the entrance,” Ms Davies said.
“We need to because we’re looking at buying (new clothes), so we need to clear out the old ones.”
“We did our own shopping at our last event, too,” Ms Grigg said.
“So the clear-out of our wardrobes didn’t go so well.”
Their primary mission is to reduce fast fashion and keep as many clothes out of landfill as possible, so their second-hand market was the perfect way to tackle this issue.
“It’s such a good way to avoid throwing your clothes out,” Ms Grigg said.
“I think some people are reluctant to take that step of taking them to the shop, and they’re very quick just to throw them in the bin.
“I think if you incentivise it and say here’s an opportunity for you to make some money, or here’s an opportunity for you to find something amazing, (it will help with) deterring people from just throwing it away altogether.
“We do throw away a lot of our clothing, and it ends up in landfill, which is not ideal, so if we can keep it on bodies instead of in the ground, I think that’s awesome.”
The Nanna Marce food van and Fast Brew Coffee will both be there on the day to support the event and keep people fed while they shop.
“This isn’t something we make money from; it’s something that we’re really passionate about, so we’re really grateful that vendors like that will come along,” Ms Grigg said.
While many stalls have filled up, Ms Davies said there were still plenty of spots up for grabs.
“There are still some stalls available to book for people who are interested, and be sure to come down from 10am to 2pm on February 17,” she said.
In My Closet — Summer Edition will be held at the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds on Saturday, February 17, from 10am to 2pm.
