The 27-year-old allrounder's 104 at No.5 in the second innings of the shock nine-wicket loss to Bangladesh in Darwin was the highlight of an overall poor display by Australia's batters.
He played beautifully down the ground and accumulated his runs without overplaying his hand early.
Ahead of the second Test, which starts in Mackay on Saturday, Green's batting will be critical for success.
In the 2025 calendar year, Green made just 300 Tests runs at 21.42 and he came into the Darwin match with external pressure on him to perform.
Green had made a classy 136 for Western Australia in March this year against NSW where he found a modus operandi that suited his own style and was also effective.
As a three-format player for Australia, he was clear about his plan of attack in Darwin after he wrote down "a few notes from what worked in that Shield game".
Captain Pat Cummins said Green was at his best when "intimidating" the opposition.
The allrounder explained what that meant for him.
"I went back to how I used to play, keeping it really simple," Green said.
"Over the last few years I have tinkered a bit and tried to find something and force it a little bit.
"It was nice to go back to Shield cricket for a game last (summer) and I went back to what I used to do. It felt really good and I have just continued that on."
Green said he "got a bit of clarity" after that Shield game around playing his way and not like Travis Head for instance.
"Travis Head is an unbelievable cricketer and he seems to be a guy who can hit shots from ball-one," Green said.
"That has never really been me so it is going back to what feels right for me and what I have done my whole life."
Coach Andrew McDonald said Green was "really clear" going into the Darwin Test that he was going to own the stumps and "go down the ground".
"The channel ball he was going to avoid early on. If you look back at his career at his starts he has flirted in the channel, but he was really disciplined in the way that he left," McDonald said.
"When you talk about intent, intent is looking to score. It is not all out attack.
"I thought he played some lovely drives down the ground which is probably his trademark. The tempo he showed while managing the lower order and rotating the strike was a step forward."
Green said he was at his best when "reasonably front-on, bat on middle stump and have a clear and simple game plan".
"The previous few years or tours I've tried to get to off-stump and play a slightly more aggressive game early, rather than just letting it happen," he said.
"That is the unfortunate thing, but also the fortunate thing that I have been through it and it is something I can work on."
Green is now in a great position to make the No.5 slot his own, whilst Head remains an opener.
"Five is a great position to bat in. I think you have got a great opportunity to bat a lot of time, but also hopefully you are not facing a brand new ball," Green said.
