Secretary Janelle McDonald said the show was all about quality and not quantity.
A statement echoed by judge Emmalea Wishart.
“I wasn’t expecting to see such high quality awesome cows, especially the younger cows,” she said.
“This is only the second show I have judged but I had a great time and hope to do more in the future.”
Featuring Jersey, Holstein and Brown Swiss, it ended up being a pretty good day for Kyabram’s Todd Brown who took home Intermediate Champion with Jersey Grand Dream Viral Fantasy and Champion Senior Jersey with Grand Dream Eclipse Merle. Sundar Total Shadow was named Champion Senior Brown Swiss.
Merle went on to be crowned Senior All Breeds Champion and Best Udder.
“I wasn’t expecting to do that well. The cows looked good but I never go into a show with massive expectations but saying that it is nice to do well,” Mr Brown said.
He is aiming to take a couple of his champion cows to International Dairy Week in January if everything goes according to plan.
“It’s always good to have a bit of early success and see where your cows stand.”
Todd works alongside Janelle on their Kyabram dairy farm and she said he is the one who prepares the cows.
She won Reserve Intermediate Jersey Champion Cow with Sunshine Farm Fowler 14, who went on to win All Breed Intermediate Champion.
“We had a really great show and the young kids had a wonderful time. We organised a barbecue and tried to make it a bit more social,” she said.
For Melissa (Mel) Fell from Kyabram the chance to take her children Kenzie, 6, and Tyler, 4, along to the show was a reminder of her own childhood.
“My kids are the fourth generation to show cows and I wanted to get them into it early,” she said.
Her father, Paul Allott from Invergordon, brought along two calves for the kids — a Brown Swiss named Lodora for Kenzie and a Friesian named Sally Blue for Tyler.
“Kenzie won her class and came third in the calf rearing class and Tyler came sixth. They loved it and had such a great time.
‘’It’s good to get the kids involved with animals and they always love spending time at the farm.”
Ms Fell said it has been 15 years since she has shown cows and she was lucky to have the opportunity to do it right across Australia.
