“I have been playing for about 40 years,” Marco said, who has spent the last five years focusing on his Australian Crawl tribute project.
“From being such a fan from when I was 16 or 17 and why it took me so long? I have no idea,” he said.
The tribute band has received an endorsement from original Australian Crawl drummer Bill McDonough, with whom Marco has developed a strong friendship.
“Here we are all these years later, deciding to start the band and find myself at this age, being actually endorsed by an original member of the band itself,” Marco said.
In preparing for his role as James Reyne, Marco took a scholarly approach to the band’s catalogue.
“What’s special about Australian Crawl to me, is the quirkiness and the lyrics that have always been misconceived because of James's singing,” he said.
Marco’s favourite Australian Crawl track to perform is Unpublished Critics’, a B-side of one of their most successful albums, Sirocco.
The upcoming show at Rich River Golf Club will feature a 70-minute set of Australian Crawl hits, followed by a 45-minute selection of classic Australian rock songs from bands including Hunters and Collectors and Noiseworks.
The format was recently tested at the Barn in Victoria with great success.
“Just expect a nostalgic trip back to the ’80s, where you could have seen some of these bands in the local hotel,” Marco said.
“That’s the feedback we get from people is basically, you made me feel 18 to 20 again.”
Reckless, an Australian Crawl tribute band, will perform a free show at the Rich River Golf Club on Saturday, July 12.
Other free shows at the Rich River Golf Club over winter include:
Tusk - The Fleetwood Mac Tribute Show - Saturday, June 7.
U2 show - Saturday, August 30.
