Season wrap: Heathcote’s ‘net’ generation of stars beat parents 5-3

By Vanessa Wiltshire

IT'S a wrap for NetSetGo, the year whizzing past in Heathcote almost as quickly as the youngsters on the court.

Co-ordinated locally through the Heathcote Football Netball Club, NetSetGo is a pre-competitive program designed by Netball Victoria. It helps equip youngsters with the skills of the game.

After an 10-week term involving enthusiastic kids aged 8 to 10, NetSetGo finished for 2019 with a “parents versus kids” game and a presentation party.

Co-coach and volunteer Helen Naylor said the parents were "definitely beaten", with a final score of 5-3.

“It's incredible what the children learn in a short time,” she said.

“Our aim is to give the kids the skills and encouragement to achieve every week. We never ceased to be amazed by their concentration, self-belief and skill improvements to become great netballers.”

Helen said NetSetGo is for boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 10.

“It helps kids get ready for sport in general, not just netball,” she said.

“They develop in all sorts of ways: ball handling and motor skills, learning to be part of a team. The children discover it’s not about winning, it’s about enjoying yourself and being a good sportsperson.”

Leonie Sieler, who has been volunteering and coaching various forms of NetSetGo since the 1990s, says the real reward is seeing each child grow in confidence.

“I've been doing this a long time,” she said.

"Helen and I absolutely love it. You never know, we may just be training a future superstar.”
