Motorways, freeways and highways across all but three states have been ranked out of five stars in the online tool, ranging from the one-star Marble Bar Road in Western Australia to a five-star stretch of the Westlink M7 in Sydney.
Austroads published the online dashboard on Monday after three years of collating, ranking and analysing the information, which the transport group said could help inform future road upgrades.
Its launch also comes amid debate about the introduction of road user charges to fund future transport infrastructure, and after figures showed Australia's road toll had climbed in 2025.
The online road safety tool, called the National AusRAP Dashboard, ranks major roads out of five stars using assessments from states and territories combined with road accident data.
Roads earn scores based on measures such as physical characteristics, including width and curvature, roadside hazards, safety features, traffic flow and speed.
Gathering safety information and making assessments had ramped up in the past five years but was a costly operation for state governments, Austroads road safety manager Michael Nieuwesteeg said.
"Every state is collecting data and using it to inform their investment decisions - it's just not being assembled in the way we've assembled it," he said.
"There's a really important opportunity here for the government to share that with the public."
The AusRAP dashboard shows details about roads in NSW, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, including traffic estimates and records of road fatalities and serious injuries.
Data from South Australia is expected to be added soon, followed by information from Queensland and Tasmania.
The National Road Safety Strategy, issued by transport ministers in 2021, aims to have 80 per cent of travel occur on roads rated three stars or more by 2030.
By publishing the data publicly, Austroads chief executive Geoff Allan said governments and motorists could identify progress and where upgrades were needed.
"If you can't measure it, you can't manage it," he told AAP.
"This is a great starting point and all governments should be congratulated for going on this journey and making the data available."
Some roads would be difficult to improve due to low-volume use or geographical limitations, Mr Allan said, and more details such as road accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists would be added to the dashboard in the future.
Australia's national road toll stood at 1340 deaths as of July 31 - a rise of 2.9 per cent, with a higher number of pedestrians killed in accidents.
The Pedestrian Council of Australia has called for the release of further government information about the cause of the rise.
