In the year 2050 Yarrawonga’s population is predicted to balloon out to 22,121 and there will be 6,200 more homes should the town follow a high growth rate.
Such growth predictions are helping shape a framework plan now underway by the Victorian Planning Authority and residents, business and visitors are currently being invited to share their vision for Yarrawonga in 2050.
The Victorian Planning Authority has identified Yarrawonga as a key future regional centre in the Hume Regional Growth Plan and is expected to continue accommodating a significant proportion of growth in Moira Shire.
The framework plan will be an update to the 2004 Yarrawonga Strategy Plan, and is a document for council, agencies and potential landowners to get greater certainty around the growth requirements of the township, as well as the broad location and timing of growth.
As part of the framework plan process, VPA has also commissioned a Stormwater Drainage Strategy to address significant flooding issues in the township and provide a whole-of-township strategy to manage stormwater drainage.
Population forecasts in the Yarrawonga Growth Strategy developed by consultants MacroPlanDimasi in 2017 predicts further growth in Yarrawonga over the next 36 years to 2051 resulting in an increased demand in dwellings and additional zoned and developed land.
Yarrawonga is also forecast to grow the number of local jobs in alignment with population growth rates.
Moira Shire Mayor Cr Libro Mustica said Yarrawonga is the fastest growing town in the shire.
“A framework plan will become part of council’s Planning Scheme and will guide the preparation and consideration of future, more detailed local plans and planning permit applications,” Cr Mustica said.
“By creating a vision for how we want Yarrawonga to develop, these individual plans and decisions can progressively contribute to the town we want.”VPA Executive Director Regional Victoria, Brett Davis, said he looked forward to hearing residents’ ideas for Yarrawonga’s future.
“The VPA is keen to find out about residents’ insights into Yarrawonga’s opportunities and how we can capitalise on these opportunities in a sustainable land use planning approach,” Mr Davis said.
“All of this feedback will help shape a large-scale, implementable plan that will guide future urban development and investment.”
The community consultation program will seek feedback on four broad themes:
recreation, environment and heritage
economy
infrastructure and utilities
housing and community facilities
The feedback process includes an interactive online story map that people can comment on.
“People of all ages will enjoy the online tool that allows participants to drop pins onto a map to indicate places they love and places they’d like to change and there is also the option to make general comments,” said Mayor Mustica.
The online map and all information about the project can be found at www.vpa.vic.gov.au/project/yarrawonga-framework-plan.
Community members can also talk with representatives of the VPA and council at drop-in sessions this Thursday, July 4 2019 at the Yarrawonga Visitor Information Centre
Representatives will be on site from 1pm - 3pm and again that evening from 4pm – 6:30pm.
The VPA has and is delivering equivalent projects for many locations across Victoria.
All feedback must be received by the VPA by Friday 19 July 2019 with the Framework Plan currently expected to return to council for endorsement later in the year
