The thoughtful, connecting day has been nominated for the Awards Australia Connecting Communities Award.
In September 2017 local resident, Allan Brennan, approached Mulwala Football Netball Club committee members about hosting a Community Christmas Day lunch for local residents 55 years and over who would normally be home alone on Christmas Day.
The thought process was that Christmas can, and often is, a very lonely time of year for those people who do not have any family to enjoy the festive day with.
The subcommittee hoped that the lunch would be a great way to get people together, enjoy a lovely Christmas lunch with all the trimmings, meet some new people and maybe form some new friendships.
The first year, with late notice a small subcommittee of the football netball club was set up to assist with the organising and running of the lunch.
The first year 33 people came to the Mulwala FNC to join in a two-course lunch.
Last year, 93 people were welcomed to the club rooms for an afternoon of food, fun and conversation.
The Mulwala FNC Community Christmas Day lunch brings together older residents in town in a welcoming and festive environment helping to alleviate isolation and loneliness.
