That was the main message from the well-attended Boweya Community Security Meeting held September 18 at the community centre.
It was seen as most effective for getting people together to work towards whole community security given the increasing number of recent farm thefts.
It was agreed that a contact list of people who can be called on in the event of trespassers entering premises is to be compiled and circulated.
“Police need to be notified as soon as possible but in a rural area police can take some time to arrive,” attendee Helen White said.
“So banding together with neighbours helps provide safety in numbers. The people on the contact list would need to be prepared to either go to the property under threat, to contact other neighbours or take on the task of calling 000.”
Leading Senior Constable, Helen Parfett, Vic Police, Wangaratta attended the meeting and urged residents to keep their properties as secure as possible.
Making it hard for thieves was the best method of deterring criminals she said.
Among the suggestions were: keeping buildings, gates and cars locked, sensor lights on buildings, alarms, marking possessions, security cameras, signage saying Surveillance Cameras In Use, Beware of the Dog or Trespassers Prosecuted are all useful.
Leading Senior Constable Parfett said that anti-theft number plate screws are also worthwhile. “Staying vigilant and noticing any unusual vehicles or activity in the area is vital,” she said.
Helen said: “A citizen’s arrest and self-protection were discussed but, of course, events need to be dealt with depending on the circumstances. The best approach is to remove yourself from danger especially if you are on your own.”
She distributed a number of information sheets including a security assessment kit which gives guidance on many measures for protecting properties.
In the latest of news reported, a white van has been seen in the area, with the driver entering a private property on Sunday, September 15 while a resident was in the house.
The driver did not knock on the door but surveyed the property. It is another timely reminder for people to remain vigilant at all times and take appropriate action.
