“To be able to bring the event, not just in Australia but around the world, into the Federation Council area should certainly be supported,” Cr Paul Miegel said at council’s monthly meeting on September 17.
Cr Bronwyn Thomas referred to the economic benefit of an estimated $2 million with the event and to a great opportunity to market the event and location.
“It’s great to see the world championships coming into the shire. The ski club has done a magnificent job,” Cr Andrew Kennedy said. “I believe it’s one of the biggest ski club in the world.”
In addition to competing, the nature of the event brings skiers and supporters to the country before and after the championships, deputy mayor Shaun Whitechurch pointed out.
“There’s been a world team at Lake Moodemere already,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for a great presentation, a world-wide event and of course I support the request.”
Unanimous support to the local organizing committee of the Show Ski World Championships – Mulwala 2020’s submission for $5,000 in cash and $2,000 in-kind support towards the running of the event was given by councillors.
The show ski world championships is a biannual event and the best 35 skiers from various countries including the mighty US team will be in action.
In her report for councilors, Federation Council’s director corporate and community services Jo Shannon said the world championships will promote Mulwala on the world stage as a premium holiday destination and attract a significant number of visitors to the region.
“The $7,000 sponsorship package will have benefits to council,” she said.
“Council’s brand will be a wide variety of advertising.”
Among the building approvals listed at council’s September meeting were upgrades to ski park to have the park in tip-top shape for the world event.
These include an elevated judging and viewing area and underneath, toilet amenities and camp kitchen block, relocation of an old clubhouse to a more discrete location, and work for increased carparking and driveway works.
