More than 260 people were in attendance and enthralled with Dr Eddy Ong, Radiation Oncologist from Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centres talk on the symptoms and treatment of prostate cancer.
Friends in Common sub-committee member Leon Porter said the breakfast was an outstanding success with the organisation raising over $7478.70.
“We are ecstatic with the turn out and so very grateful to everyone that attended and donated as well as all of those who helped to once again help this event to be a great success,” Leon said.
“We are so proud of the success of this event and that we are able to help those suffering in some small way; we just want to thank you all for your support.
“We’d also like to thank all those businesses and organisations who donated money and raffle prizes, Club Mulwala for hosting the event and providing us with a lovely breakfast, Yarrawonga Health, the CWA, Sacred Heart College and Yarrawonga College P-12 students for assisting us on the day selling tickets, Mulwala WaterSki Club who were co-sponsors of the event, Michael Price for MC’ing as he did a wonderful job and guest speaker Dr Eddy Ong from Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre who gave a wonderful insight into all aspects of Prostate cancer.”
Guest speaker Dr Ong was very insightful in his description of the varying stages of prostate cancer and what medical care is available in the region.
“Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men with one in eight suffering, it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths with 3000 per year” Dr Ong said.
“There are 20,000 new cases per year.
“There is usually no symptoms in the early stages but screening begins in men over 50 or men at 40 with a family history of prostate cancer.”
Dr Ong further explained the screening process, the different levels of prostate cancer, which options are available and the differing treatments.
“With radiation, everything is measured carefully and generally it will run for a 7.5-8 week (37 – 40 sessions Monday – Friday) cycle with a doctor review weekly and follow up appointments for five years,” Dr Ong said.
“For low risk cases we are able to accommodate in Albury but certain surgeries and advanced cases are often referred to Melbourne.”
As well as the money raised there were many lucky door prizes and raffles with the major raffle winners being Pam Holmes winning the $100 Club Mulwala gift card, Lorrie Nicholson winning the quilt donated by Kathy Payne and family and Kat Gorman winning the TV donated by Peter and Kat O’Brien as part of the major raffle prizes.
