Mr Ferguson started in the role on January 14, 2019 and officially ceased duty at Australia’s largest public access golf course club on Monday.
After 35 years in the hospitality industry, the last 20 years of which have been in administrative positions, the 58-year-old is seeking a career change.
“I’m having an extended holiday then I will be likely to enter the music industry,” he told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
“I am very proud of the team at Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort, I was keen to look after our 120 employees and turn the club’s fortunes around.”
When Mr Ferguson arrived at the club, it had endured an operating loss of $641,235 for financial year 2017/18.
The bottom line for 2018/19 showed a significant turnaround, with $113,347 as the operating profit.
“When I arrived the $640,000 loss wasn’t the deathknell for the club but the club could not continue that slide. We turned the club’s fortunes around.
“I’m at a stage in my life that I want a change. The respect I’ve been afforded in the music industry is something I can no longer resist and as a result I will most likely be taking on a music manager role.”
Mr Ferguson has close links with the Fanbelt music band. “It’s a big change – challenge if you like – but it’s the direction I want to go,” he said of his career change intentions after a holiday.
“I thank all the well-wishers who have been in touch with me since my decision and I wish Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort all the best.”
YMGCR President Gil Cunningham said he, and the Board of Directors, were surprised and disappointed with Mr Ferguson’s resignation.
“It’s at a time when inroads were being made into the business,” the president said.
“However, life goes on and we’ll move on. It’s business as usual. I thank Greg for his time at our club.”
Mr Cunningham said that operations manager Peter Savy, will act as CEO as an interim measure. No advertising action is being taken at this stage.
