Last week unleaded fuel remained at over $1.35 per litre in some stations in Yarrawonga up until the weekend, while in nearby towns the prices were as low as $1.10 per litre according the RACV website.
As of Tuesday, April 21 the Woolworths Caltex stations had unleaded advertised for $1.19.9 per litre and diesel at $1.37.9 per litre while many Melbourne stations were around the $1 per litre mark for unleaded and around $1.25 per litre for diesel according the RACV website.
Local State Member for Ovens Tim McCurdy told the Yarrawonga Chronicle on Monday it was very frustrating that the Yarrawonga community who works so well together was being “gouged” by the fuel retailers.
“Petrol and diesel in other parts of the state has seen a massive price reduction at the bowser and yet we are getting ripped off in Yarrawonga.
“Petrol pricing in Yarrawonga has a flow on effect as some choose to shop out of town and buy a tank of fuel elsewhere, which then reduces shopping locally.”
Local resident Ian Sandow was one resident who emailed the Chronicle recently expressing his concern about the fuel pricing.
“I had to travel to Wangaratta for medical reasons recently and filled my tank for 20 cents per litre less than here.
“As far as I’m concerned this is outright gouging,” Mr Sandow said.
Mr McCurdy said he will be drafting a petition to take to state and federal parliament to highlight what he believes is a serious and unethical conduct.
“I am seeking interest from shops in the Yarrawonga region who might consider having a petition in their business to sign,” Mr McCurdy said.
