The COVID-19 restrictions haven’t dampened the spirits of Yarrawonga’s grand, oldest resident Doris Head who will turn 103-years-of-age on Thursday, June 4.

“No! I don’t let that worry me!” she told the Yarrawonga Chronicle. “I feel life today with this COVID-19 is like when we had the ‘galloping consumption’ in 1922. It was called galloping consumption because it spread. It was more like pneumonia.”
That disease was labelled ‘galloping consumption’ by doctors in Ireland as it consumed people.
Doris didn’t hesitate when answering her reason for a very long life. “I love people – as you know. I love life and family. I’m enjoying good health. I just feel great.”
Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort Life Member and Number One ticket holder loved her golf, starting in 1947 when today’s Pro Shop was a dairy. It is amazing history.
The clubhouse was known as The Kipsey located on the hill above today’s Lake Course Par 5, 13th hole. The first tee was close to today’s ClubMulwala entrance.
On her 100th birthday in 2017, Doris officially opened the $10,000 3m tall green coloured steel clock alongside the practice putting green. She was made a Life Member in 1992.
Club president Gil Cunningham referred to Doris’s immense contribution to the club over the years. “There would be few, if any, who have as much knowledge of our great club as Doris,” he said.
“We love to hear about those earlier days and we hope to keep making special birthday cakes for many more years to come for Doris.”
Doris’s daughter Lesley travels from Melbourne every fortnight to see her Mum. “It’s wonderful to see her enjoying good health, and the fuss people like those at the golf club go to for her,” Lesley said. No fuss whatsoever, Lesley, just so deserving of it!
