The association wants the situation to revert to the all-time (Corowa Shire) method of outdoor operations before the new Federation Council was controlled by the Administrator in 2016 prior to the first elected Federation Council in September 2017.
The letter for the permanent Mulwala staffing arrangement was tabled in correspondence received at council’s latest monthly meeting on May 19.
“It is obvious Mulwala is growing so fast and is becoming one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations,” the letter stated.
“With three successful licensed clubs, a magnificent water frontage, improved shopping centre and growing population it is imperative to keep our town looking inviting and beautiful.”
The concern from Mulwala Progress Association was strongly supported by Howlong-based Councillor David Longley.
“Even this morning I had to attend to a water problem in Howlong and we have issues at our Tip – there’s no-one there,” he said.
Mulwala-based Councillor Bronwyn Thomas said the matter has been an ongoing issue with the progress association for some years and asked council’s General Manager Adrian Butler the current situation.
Mr Butler acknowledged it has been an ongoing concern of the progress association for some time.
“It’s not just a matter of having staff there,” he said. “It’s a service matter, an operational matter.” Mr Butler said he would refer the matter to director engineering services Steve Carmichael and to recreation officer Darren Harvey for consideration and reporting back on the situation.
Mulwala Progress Association President Robert Purtle OAM said he and committee members were pleased to hear of Cr Longley’s comments and that council will consider “this nearly four year problem”.
“But we want to see the matter addressed as quickly as possible. We don’t want another 12 months to go by.
“We need to see the fruits of our labour - keeping up the appearance at all times in view of a fast and growing Mulwala,” he said.
Cr Thomas also raised matters associated with Lonsdale Reserve Mulwala regarding availability of funds, the master plan and Section 355 committee process.
Mr Butler said he will take on board the matters raised, some of which will be addressed in the upcoming budget.
