The selected body will partner Federation Council to support the delivery of the community event that will follow the official proceedings.
“The successful community group or organisation will work with Council to deliver an event that is family friendly, inclusive and provides an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the occasion,” council’s director corporate and community services Jo Shannon said at council’s monthly zoom meeting on July 30.
“A total budget of $8,000 has been allocated in council’s 2020/21 budget to support the delivery of the Australia Day ceremony and community event. A percentage of the budget from this will be given to the community group/organisation to organise the community aspect of the event.”
Australia Day 2021 nomination awards will open on Monday, September 30 and close Friday, December 6, 2020.
Each nomination is assessed by a judging panel and certificates will be presented at the official Australia Day civic function.
The judging panel will include four councillors, a past award winner, a representative from Ageing Well Advisory Committee and a representative from Federation Youth Council.
Deputy Mayor Shaun Whitechurch referred to next year’s Australia Day being on a Tuesday, not a weekend. “Organisations will have to be aware of that – it may not be as big as previous ones,” he added.
Categories of awards are: Federation Council Citizen of the Year, Federation Council Young Citizen of the Year (under 30-years=of-age), Federation Council Community Event of the Year, Federation Council Community Project of the Year, Local Achiever Awards – a local hero will be recognised in each town and village (subject to nominations). School Achiever Awards Schools within the Federation Council area will be invited to nominate two students who have been outstanding achievers in 2020 in either their academic or sporting fields.
