Heads turned, glared and admired. A total of 505 cars covering years 1922 to 1975 were in Yarrawonga Mulwala for the Lake Mulwala Rod Run from last Friday to Sunday.

The total of 505 was the largest since 2013, the first year of the rod run when some 900 cars converged on Yarrawonga Mulwala.
Locals were, in fact, spoilt as many cars were in town two or three days before the official start of the popular hot rod event.
Speaking to the Yarrawonga Chronicle at J C Lowe Oval’s spectacular scene last Sunday, Northern Suburbs Street Rod Club (NSSR) President Michael Greche said he was thrilled with the three-day event.

“It’s tremendous to see so many new cars and also great to see some old faces back to make this bigger than recent years,” he said.
“They’ve come from every state in Australia dodging potholes and avoiding the water to make this show really successful and spectacular.”
Because of so much rain in the weeks leading up to the Lake Mulwala Rod Run, last Sunday’s program had to be shifted from a spongy Yarrawonga Foreshore to the manicured J C Lowe football oval.
“I thank the footy club for providing access for our cars and everything else here on the oval,” Mr Greche said.
The Sunday Show ‘n’ Shine was marvellous, with the lines of every colour car as well as plenty of stalls, an SES demonstration and various competitions, including a beauty competition.

Hundreds of people aligned Belmore Street late Saturday afternoon into the night to admire hundreds of immaculately maintained cars.
“It was fantastic to see the cars and hear the rumble as the V8 rods cruise Yarrawonga Mulwala again,” Executive Officer, Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business Noel Wright said.
“The rod run contributes more than $4 million in economic impact in our community with incalculable social benefits – the positive impact to everyone’s wellbeing is evident. The whole community just loves this family-orientated event.
“Large events outside of peak holiday periods is an easy way to add impetus or stimulus to the retail sector with the immediate financial benefits seen by all.”
Mr Wright referred to the social benefits of large events such as the Lake Mulwala Rod Run. “As people recover from the Covid induced coma and now the anxiety of widespread flooding, these events are something for all to look forward to and are of vital importance to help people in our community with their overall wellbeing,” he said.
Mr Greche expressed a big thank you to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourist Information Centre staff for their support of the Lake Mulwala Rod Run, and to the local residents and visitors for acknowledging the hot rod cars and owners.
“We thank all our sponsors. It’s great to see two of Australia’s largest motoring magazines ‘Cruizin’ and ‘Graffiti’ supporting us here in Yarrawonga Mulwala also,” the president said.
