Midweek Pennant and the A1’s played the local derby against Yarrawonga. These contests are always a tough and close encounter, and this was no exception, with YMGCR winning 10/55 to 4/51. With 1 end to play and YMGCR trailing by 1 shot, it was up to Anne Miles rink with Siggi Rempel putting 2 good bowls and then Robyn Moore then followed up with another 2.
YMGCR were holding 4 and when Peter Velardo also put another in the head the pressure was building.
Miles then went for a bit of cover and with the head not changing YMGCR won by 4.
Anne won 24/11 to secure victory and place on top of the ladder. Greg “GG” Green ‘s rink started slow being 0/8 down, they then got in front but to Yarra’s credit they came back to win 19/16.
Claire Sanders rink bowled well but Yarra’s old “champ” Roger McKenzie played some big bowls to win 21/15.
A2’s travelled to Corowa RSL and lost 0/42 to 14/70. Allan Goudge lost 14/23, Garry Hart lost 16/25 and Ian Price lost 12/22 and they are now 4th on the ladder.
A3’s played Yarrawonga at home and winning 12/63 to 2/54. Bob Liddell rink of John Wenzel, Pam Dodman and lead Norm Winderbank had a big win 27/14 and well backed up by Marie Whitehead rink winning 19/14.
Doddy’s rink lost 17/26 and this now puts them 3rd on the ladder.
B1’s played Club Mulwala away and drew 6/59 to 8/59, Greg Fisher had a great win 27/14, Eugene Hodson just going down 20/22 and Kim Johnston losing 12/23.
Weekend Pennant had A1’s travel to play Corowa RSL and losing 4/79 to 14/86.
Michael Szabo’s keeps rolling along with another win 31/22, Ray Irvine got up winning a close battle 18/17 and Jim LeFerve losing 15/20 and Anne Miles losing 15/27. They are still 2nd on the ladder.
A2’s played Yackandandah (love that name) at home and recording their first taste of victory winning 14/81 to 4/77.
With Cat going back to skipping they recorded a solid win 22/13. Ian Price rink worked hard all day winning 24/16 and Kerry Kinnane rink jumped out of the blocks fast but got pegged back losing 18/20.
With Pricey and Kinnane having 1 end each to bowl and Pricey down on the head things were looking grim with Yacka just in front, but Ian played an aggressive up shot to pick up 3 shots giving Kerry breathing space.
Yackandandah were holding shot when up step Robert “Pinkie” Lidgerwood took the advantage back and when the Yack skip missed both times with his drive Yarra had got over the line.
Kerry still had the last bowl and pondered to play it.
Siggi Rempel rink were 2/21 down after 9 ends and it was looking rather bleak but once they won the mat and went short things began to happen and lost 17/28, this now moves them up to 7th on the ladder.
The A4’s had a big game against Corowa RSL at home and they lost 4/80 to 14/85 with Bob Liddell winning 24/18 and Ian Morffew being well down early fight back and win 21/20 (still unbeaten). Steve Gann lost 13/19 and Marie Whitehead lost 18/22. They currently are 5th on the ladder.
B2’s had a bye.
Sunday had the OandM ladies and men’s pairs quarter finals at Corowa Civic and in the ladies section YMGCR had a composite team of Kerry Leask and Susie Middleton beat the mother and daughter combination of Laureen and Rhoanne Smith.
In the semifinal Leask and Middleton played a Wangaratta team in Jodie Freund and Renee Hill and won comfortably.
The good news got better with Anne Miles and Claire Sanders playing a great game against a very good composite team in Kylie Whitehead and Mary Tragarah and also winning comfortably.
They will play in the final at a date yet to be set.
In the men’s quarter finals the Lefevre combination drew another YMGCR side in Michael Szabo and Ray Brown with the LeFevre’s coming out on top.
The other YMGCR team of Ray Irvine and Peter Velardo powered their way into the semifinals with a resounding victory against a Benalla team.
They then had to play a Wangaratta team of Greg McDonald and Craig Freund and in a tight game with 1 end to play trailed by 1 shot.
Peter then put 2 bowls on the jack only to see the opposition trail the jack for 2.
“Sugar” Ray then pulled out a blinder to sit the shot bowl and take the end and force into an extra end.
Peter once again put 2 good bowls down on the jack and then Sugar added to it.
It then came down to the last bowl for McDonald and he missed and the YMGCR side was into the final.
In the other semi the LeFevre’s played another Wangaratta side and losing a 5 on the first end never recovered.
With all 4 players playing great bowls and the jack bouncing all over the place nearly every end the Wang boys got through.
So, the men’s final will be played next Sunday, December 20 starting at 9.30.
In the final of the novice ladies singles, Kim Johnston (playing her last game for the club) won 21/4 and going back to back.
All the best for your future and we will miss her all her work she did around the club greatly.
