Known as the 19th hole, a short Par 3 hole with four tees ranging in distance from 76m to 109m, with a superb 35m long, 650sqm Penncross Bentgrass green, was officially declared ready for play last Friday, May 10.
Located in between the first and ninth holes on the 18-hole Lake Course, the idea of the extra hole can be an ‘interchange hole’.
“We can take a hole completely out of play – the new hole fits in with our bunker process where every bunker on our Lake Course, for example, needs to be fixed and with beautiful white sand,” explained club captain Stephen Buckley.
Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort captain Stephen Buckley hits and declares open “the 19th hole” which becomes the club’s overall 46th hole.
“Now we have this new hole we can actually start on that program and always have 18 holes in the round.”
Completion of the hole delighted the captain. “We have more golf holes than any other club in Australia as far as a public access golf course goes,” he said.
“The condition of the course is excellent – we won’t only be the best course along the Murray but the best golf club resort which is going to attract more tourism with more people wanting to come up and play golf and stay at our club resort.”
“This is home grown, built by our people, something you can be proud of. We have a beautiful course. We’ll have people raving about Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort.
Club course superintendent Chris Burgess was pleased with the new hole result. “It’s a low-cost maintenance hole – no bunkers,” he said.
“Choice of club from the tee-stand is important. The green has nice, gentle undulations and the Penncross Bentgrass is the top grass. It’s the number one seeder in the world, as on the Lake Course holes.”
The seed was planted last November and the whole hole became operational six months later.
Mr Burgess explained the club had been looking for a suitable location for about 10 years and even had an architect seek a site. Eventually the old nursery area was chosen by the club.
“This site actually works for us – close to the clubhouse and the three courses. Six months after seeding operational It cost under $25,000. It was a really good team effort.
“You can use it for special events including hole-in-one and party/function type competitions.”
