Renewable Avenel Energy, a local powerhouse dedicated to enlisting people to the ‘renewable revolution’, will soon host its Home Energy Expo, and on the list of guest speakers is none other than Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, Australia’s very own science de-mystifier.
Many will recognise Dr Karl’s enthusiastic voice accurately answering questions thrown his way on triple j’s science hour, a segment he has been part of for almost 50 years.
Appearing as a guest speaker at the expo aligns with one of Dr Karl’s, seemingly limitless, special interests.
“I wrote my first story on climate change back in 1981, so it’s something I’ve been following for a very long time — you know, climate change and its implications on our society,” Dr Karl said.
“Back in 1981, the scientists weren’t yet convinced, that took a little bit longer.
“It’s a serious thing that we can fix, we can actually fix global warming or climate change with just six words, which is: keep fossil carbon in the ground.”
The purpose of RAE’s upcoming expo is education: what can we, at home, do to aid in the fight against climate change?
Supported by joint funding from Strathbogie Shire Council and AusNet, the expo is set to broaden local understanding of renewable energy options.
John O’Donoghue of RAE said the event would be all about championing home-based solutions to climate change.
“We’re a small group here in Avenel that are trying to promote the cause of renewable energy, particularly solar,” he said.
“There’ll be a number of exhibitors participating in the trade show, with services or goods that relate to renewable energy.
“We’re targeting homes, and what people can do, what individuals can do.”
Also on the list of special guest speakers for the night are Matthew Charles-Jones, Russell Klose, John Warnock and Geoff Lodge, all of whom are passionate about the renewable energy sector.
Held in the Avenel Memorial Hall, the event will see a number of local businesses, government agencies and service providers exhibiting to educate attendees on what they can do in the fight against climate change.
“We want to educate people on what’s out there, and we’re not trying to inundate them with too much information,” Mr O’Donoghue said.
“We want to make sure the information we do share is current, and it’s accurate, and it’s applicable to our needs here.”
Dr Karl said it was always better to do something than nothing at all.
“It’s very difficult to make predictions, especially about the future, but if I do nothing, it won’t be as effective as if I try to do something,” he said.
“So, I’m trying to do something.”
The Avenel Home Energy Expo will take place on Friday, August 22 from 12.30pm to 6.30pm.
