Many people have commented that there have been bad smells in past years due to certain works at Thales as well as canola growing rife around the outskirts of town, however they claim this year has been one of the worst they have experienced.
Complaints were made to both Federation Council and the NSW EPA with both organisations following procedure.
A Federation Council spokesperson said that residents reported an offensive smell near Thales in Bayly Street, Mulwala.
"As this facility is licensed by the NSW EPA, it is therefore their jurisdiction to investigate and take any action if necessary," the spokesperson said.
"Council has notified the EPA of the complaints received and understands they will be investigating the source of the smell in Bayly Street further."
A NSW Environment Protection Authority spokesperson confirmed that the EPA had received complaints about an odour impacting residents in the Mulwala region and had identified the source through their investigation.
“We’ve been surveying the area and identified Thales Munitions site as the source of the odour,” the NSW Environment Protection Authority said.
“We’ve met with the operators and conducted a thorough inspection of the facility and we’re working with them to monitor and resolve the situation.
“Thales has distributed letters to the community, informing them of the steps being taken to address the issue.”
