The EC Griffith Cup boat races and Yarrawonga Fair event continues to grow in popularity alongside a carnival like atmosphere attracting thousands of people over three days.
The 2022 EC Griffith Cup Carnival on this weekend will see Lake Mulwala play host to a full schedule of races for a variety of boat classes over three big days.

Lake Mulwala has a long proud history with power boat racing and in 2010 hosted the World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championships.
Meanwhile on the shore Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business (YMTB) hope to create an atmosphere consistent with the Valley field event in Canada with side show alley and thrill rides for kids of all ages, bar facilities for 18+ and static displays all on offer.
This three-day event is free for all to enter and is a great opportunity for families all over the region to enjoy the festivities on the foreshore as well as watch some boat racing in a COVID safe environment on the vast foreshore.
Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and Business (YMTB) Executive Officer Noel Wright is expecting this year’s event, which is to be held on April 22-24, “the biggest on the Yarrawonga Mulwala yearly calendar for years to come”.
Large crowds of people swarmed to both the Yarrawonga and Mulwala foreshores last year to watch the speed boat racing whilst also enjoying the atmosphere and hospitality on offer with the Yarrawonga Fair on the lawns at the Yarrawonga foreshore.
Reminiscent of the days the boat races were held on New Year’s Day a huge crowd flocked to the foreshore last April for the successful 2021 EC Griffith Cup boat racing event and Foreshore Fair.
“We are planning now for another big event and the economic benefits will hopefully come again.
“We are expecting the type of racing from the boats to be as good or even better than last year.
“There will also be a Sunday Farmer’s Market, sideshow alley and rides for the kids, a selection of food vendors, licenced bar and some great static displays. It should be a great opportunity for families all over the region to enjoy the festivities and watch some exciting boat racing on the vast foreshore.”
The EC Griffith Cup final will be held at around 3.30pm on the Sunday. The cup gets its name from the trophy’s donor, Earnest Charles Griffith, who in 1910 presented a hand-beaten solid silver trophy for the Australasian Championship.
Boats can be of any design to contest the cup, as long as they are inboard and powered by a single automotive engine.
The event is generally the domain of the Grand Prix Hydroplanes, the world’s fastest circuit race boats which roar across the water at surface speeds in excess of 280kms per hour.
