Nicholls MP, Sam Birrell this morning said he hoped the split in the Federal coalition would be short-lived and that his focus, regardless of party agreements, was to represent his electorate.
The National Party yesterday announced its intention to not renew the Coalition agreement with the Liberal Party, a decision party leader David Littleproud said was based on principal.
The decision has been widely criticised as overreach with the sticking points not considered insurmountable.
Mr Littleproud said policy positions on the $20 billion Regional Future Fund, Australia’s energy mix, divestiture laws to guard against abuses of market power by supermarkets and universal service obligations for telecommunications in the bush were unable to be agreed to after lengthy discussions with Liberal leader, Sussan Ley.
Mr Birrell said a united Coalition alternative government was critical to democracy and Australia’s future.
“There is no animosity, and the party leaders have committed to continue to work towards a Coalition agreement, which we have had in place for most of the past 80 years,” he said.
“Our job is to fight for regional people and that is what we will keep doing during this next parliament.”
