Camel tales mesmerise

Andrew Harper had a captive audience when he returned to Deniliquin recently, to discuss his famous camel trekking expeditions.

A special guest at Orana Aged Care, most remembered Andrew because of his well-renowned parents - Dr Ian Harper and mother Jean, who was a nurse.

But Andrew has carved out a bit of fame for himself because of his work with Outback Camel Company as a dessert walker and explorer.

More than 60 people packed into Orana’s main Leetham Room, and were extremely engaged by the insightful presentations and retelling of his connections to Deniliquin - especially through his father.

Mr Harper also spoke about the 50 year anniversary of the Outback Camel Company, and the Mayo Mail initiative which allows members of the public to have letters cross the desert before being delivered to their final destination.

Mr Harper’s visit has been a long time coming for the Orana residents and staff.

He was booked to speak to residents in 2020, but that was interrupted by COVID-19.

This is the first time Mr Harper and Orana’s schedules have aligned to allow the presentation to be held.

Orana hopes it will be the start of a new series of presentations for residents, featuring varied speakers.
