Collecting throughout the year, Mr Christy fills his trailer and ute tray with cans — worth 10c a pop — and brings them to Barham.
Mr Christy has been fundraising this way for nearly 30 years, and strives to beat his donation record every year.
Beginning with $1100 raised, in 2023 he reached $8105 and in 2024 $12,251.
For the 2025 appeal, Mr Christy has raised $12,620 through the collection.
That equates to 126,200 containers.
“It’s loaded up every time,” he said.
“I get a good kick out of doing it.”
On Monday, April 7, Mr Christy delivered his final contribution for the 2025 appeal to the Barham collection point.
Thirty-eight bags, full to the brim, were dropped off.
Mr Christy is humble when reflecting on his significant fundraising efforts.
“I wake up in the morning and think, ‘what can I do?’,” he said.
“I’ve got a couple of cans to sort.
“It’s a 100km drive, but not a bad one, and the people there are good to me.”
Mr Christy sources his cans from Rich River Golf Club, holiday and caravan parks, and from his former Simplot colleagues, who leave them at his doorstep.
Despite finishing up at the company almost 20 years ago, the business still saves its containers for Mr Christy.
He is grateful for the help his friends and wider community provide to him.
“People say I’ve done a great job,” Mr Christy said.
“(It’s also) about what people drop to me.”
