The awards were presented by John Parnell, brigade administrative support officer for Moira, who said the awards were one way in which the worth of the volunteers’ time, efforts and professionalism could be recognised.
“The Burramine CFA has long been established in this community,” John said.
“It has been active and successful in dealing with fire outbreaks in the Burramine and wider areas.
“In recent years there have been more call outs to fire situations along the Murray on account of its increasing popularity with campers”.
Prominent amongst those receiving awards were John Laffan Snr (dec) (70 year service medal), Alastair Forge (65 years), Greg Cummins (60 years), John Lawless (60 years), John Ryan (60 years), James Cummins (55 years), Mick Doyle (55 years), Peter Lawless (55 years), Mick Connell (50 years), Malcolm Browning (50 years), Des Cummins (50 years) and Mick Quinn (50 years).
The mainstays of the brigade over many years, Malcolm and Wendy Browning, have together contributed more than 80 years of service.
Brigade captain, Peter Lawless said the Brownings’ support for the Brigade over such a long period had been of enormous value and continues today.
John Parnell spoke about the medal’s design, which represents the eight qualities required of a firefighter; dexterity, explicitness, gallantry, loyalty, observation, perseverance, sympathy and tact.
“The members of brigades such as Burramine, who are mostly on the land, have these qualities and more,” John said.
“The community should be especially grateful for their selfless contributions.”
