The local fruit grower, wheat trader, and Cobram Secondary College teacher said he was a lifelong Liberal with a deep understanding of regional Victoria.
Mr Brooks paid tribute to retiring, long-serving MP Wendy Lovell, saying she had served the community and the Liberal Party commendably and thanked her for 24 years of service.
“I will work incredibly hard to remove the current state Labor government,” Mr Brooks said.
“It is inconceivable to me that Labor could rort $15 billion of our public money and still be re-elected.
“Those who know me, know how passionate I am about good, open and transparent government; I am very proud to be a part of a Jess Wilson-led Coalition, which can deliver that for Victoria.”
Steve Brooks was born and raised along the Murray and introduced to politics through his family’s small business community.
After 11 years working across Asia, Europe and North America selling Australian produce, he returned home to become a primary producer in the Murray Valley.
He brings firsthand knowledge of regional economies, education, water policy, and an intimate understanding of the role small business plays in our regional communities and says he is committed to being an authentic voice for Northern Victoria in the Victorian Parliament.
“I want to see the Victorian taxpayer receive value for money, not get robbed by Labor,” he said.
“Only a Liberal-led government will see our finances back under control and prioritise frontline services and our roads.
“As a next generation Liberal, I believe that the greatest issue we face is the inability of many young Australians to own their own home.
“Under Labor, Victorian land taxes have tripled in a decade, which has meant less houses being built.
“I will fight for young people, to ensure that the conditions are right to build more houses is a top priority.
“Under Labor, crime has risen, cost of living has soared, and the government has been more focused on itself and its CFMEU mates, rather than standing up for you.
“I want to see a return to sensible government to focus on fixing the cost of living, getting on top of Victoria’s debt, and delivering the frontline services Victorians expect.”
