Yarrawonga Lions held its annual Junior Public Speaking Competition in their clubrooms recently.
Eight students from three local schools participated. From Mulwala Primary School Remi Riches, Nevaeh Rosmulder, Natalie Linehan and Brodie Read, Sacred Heart Primary Georgie Perks and Spencer Cowan and Yarrawonga College P-12 were represented by Isabelle Porter and Mia Macheda.
The Lions Junior Public Speaking (JPS) competition is a fantastic program which provides primary school students with the opportunity to develop and refine their ability to speak in public.
It’s amazing what this program can do for the kids that participate – not to mention the benefits that Lions Club members receive as well.
This program has been running successfully since 2007 in the district and in 2016 it became a Multiple District project. Teachers are making it part of their class curriculum as it incorporates story writing, research and speaking in front of the class.
All students did an amazing job but unfortunately there could any be one winner in each age level.
Year 3/4 Winner - Isabell Porter (Yarrawonga College P-12), Runner Up Remi Riches (Mulwala Primary School).
Year 5/6 - Spencer Cowan (Sacred Heart Primary), Runner up Natalie Linehan (Mulwala Primary School).
A huge thank you to judges Margaret Best, Helen White and Max Grinter; an unenviable job. Thanks to Mulwala Bakery for providing a delicious afternoon tea, which everyone enjoyed. Without the involvement of local schools this event could not happen, and the Lions Club are fortunate that schools support this amazing project.
On August 7 the Lions Club will be hosting the Regional Level of this competition which attracts representatives from about 10 different Lions Clubs.
Craft Expo around the corner
If you have a craft you would like to exhibit or handmade items to sell at the upcoming Craft Expo at Uniting Church Yarrawonga on Saturday, August 20 contact Lions at lakemulwala.vic@lions.org.au or Helen White on 0407521278.
