Wall art project nears completion

The art currently being created on the wall overlooking Rotary Park in Belmore Street is the work of Benalla Artist Tim Bowtell, well known for Silo Art throughout Northern Victoria.
Located on the north wall of South of the Border Café, the work is a homage to “The Grove Open Air Picture Theatre”, which from 1935 until 1964, occupied this site between Belmore and Hume Streets.
The theatre was owned by The Alexander Park Trust with all profits directed to the development of Alexandra Park and beautification of Yarrawonga.
The original creation of the park and Don Forbes Walk in 1979 was a Rotary Community Project, celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Rotary International.
Don Forbes, who managed the theatre for many years, was a member of The Alexandra Park Trust and the Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala.
The wall art project celebrates 75 years of continuing community service by The Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala, who funded the project and will be formally opened shortly.
Yarrawonga Lions presents Chris August award
A very surprised and humbled Jo Heslin was presented with Lions District V6 Chris August Award at Bunnings recently.
This award is for her outstanding service to the local community and constant involvement with the Lions Club.
The Lions District 20IV6 "Chris August Memorial Award" for outstanding service to the local community, is dedicated to the memory of Charter President Chris August who was generally recognised as the founder and father of Lions Clubs in North East Victoria and Southern New South Wales.
Jo has been involved with the local club over a number of years helping with new projects like the Buddy Benches, donated prizes to the annual wool show, supplied items for raffles and so much more.
Jo has enabled the Yarrawonga Lions to be involved in some wonderful Bunnings community events held at Christmas and Easter.
Jo has a continuous smile and always ready for a chat to see what she can do next for the club.
“We have shared good times, lots and laughs and today a few tears as Jo is now moving to Darwin,” Lions President Joan Tufvesson said.
“Jo you have personally promoted the profile of Bunnings within Yarrawonga and District, and you will be sadly missed.
“Be assured that Yarrawonga Lions will continue with the projects that we have put in place with your help.”
Freemasons news
As a community we are lucky to have the number of willing volunteers and organisations who give their time and physical effort to allow the operation of groups to support fundraising for benevolent purposes.
From the small beginnings in Piper Street, the Farmers Market formed about 15 years ago, now resides as the Farmer’s and Craft Market Lakeside foreshore off Hunt Street.
With an opportunity of providing a sausage sizzle to the patrons and for increasing necessities for charity efforts, Freemasons created a small stall.
With health and council regulations all approved the stall has provided a simple and humble treat for many over those years.
All ingredients used were purchased or donated by local retailers.
But some things do reach a point in time and for the Freemasons, the manning of this stall has become a difficult situation particularly during the past years.
To all the many regular customers and especially to neighbouring stall holders, the Freemasons forward on their appreciation for the continuous patronage and friendships.
This indeed strengthened the purpose of the efforts, leading to benefitting the local community in many ways.
However, it is with regret that this now ends, for Freemasons to serve you by this method.
The normal charity efforts will remain constant but reduced by this absence.
All those additional contributions were distributed and used and include some of the following: Yarrawonga Health, disadvantaged support for school students, patients with cancer, aged care and many others within the surrounding areas of the border of Victoria and New South Wales.
Thank you to all for your contribution.
A striking display
Dick Twigg’s Matchbox collection
Shortly before Dick Twigg died earlier this year, he donated his life-time collection of matchboxes to the Mulwala Historical Society.
There are examples from almost every country in the world, and includes labels, magazines and other Phillumeny memorabilia.
The society decided to have a special exhibition with the aim of having Dick to open it himself however he died just short of his 97th birthday.
Dick was raised in the Peaks district of Staffordshire England with three siblings.
Shortly before the end of WWII, he enlisted in the Royal Navy then emigrated to Australia, where on a trip to Mulwala, he enjoyed the town so much that he lived there for the next 60 years.
Dick Twigg was very involved in the Mulwala Football Netball Club and kept fit by riding his bicycle everywhere.
He lived independently until his death. Dick was a memorable character and made a great impression on all he met.
