Don’t rubbish Mulwala

Rubbish from foreshore areas in Mulwala is now being collected daily by Cleanaway following an overflow of rubbish over the particularly busy Christmas/New Year period.

The worst overflow of garbage was at Purtle Park, despite three skips being left at the drive in section.

Reports of abuse to the system with some people dumping rubbish from their own homes were made to Federation Council.

“We have authorized Cleanaway to pick up the rubbish every day and we are looking at opening the tip more often,” council’s General Manager Adrian Butler told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.

“It’s something we will have to address in future, regardless of whether there has been abuse to the system or not. We must have a clean situation in that regard.”

Mulwala Progress Association President Robert Purtle OAM said it was a shame the skips had to be placed in the one spot. “But where else could they go?” he asked.

“There’s been a particularly big use of that area with fishing, swimming and skiing. It’s also a shame there’s been some abuse of the skips. I’ve also heard that rubbish has been dumped in a skip at Lonsdale Reserve.

“I think for next Christmas council should consider letting households use all three colour bins each week for collection, not just green and red one week, and green and yellow the next week.”
