Mary Agostino was appointed on Tuesday, April 15, after having served as interim CEO since December last year.
Ms Agostino brings to the role a deep understanding of the organisation, the region, and the aspirations of the growing and diverse community of the shire.
Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said Ms Agostino was selected as a result of her strategic leadership, extensive local knowledge and commitment to collaboration.
“Mary has demonstrated unwavering commitment to Mitchell Shire and a genuine passion for public service,” Cr Dougall said.
“She brings an enterprising mindset, a strong sense of purpose and the kind of inclusive leadership that will help us deliver real results for our community.”
As council develops its new Council Plan 2025-2029, the appointment comes at a pivotal time.
“There is a real push from both council and the organisation to align our priorities and tackle the issues our community cares about most,” Cr Dougall said.
“From our investment in roads and recreation facilities to our focus on health, wellbeing and community pride, we’re determined to make Mitchell a place where people feel connected, supported and optimistic about the future.”
Ms Agostino has held senior executive roles at Mitchell Shire Council since 2017, and has previously worked at the Cities of Whittlesea, Wyndham and Merri-Bek.
This year, Ms Agostino was named one of the LGIU 25 Thinkers in Local Government worldwide, and was honoured on the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2021.
Ms Agostino said she was thrilled to lead an organisation and community she cared deeply about.
“Mitchell is a vibrant and growing municipality with enormous opportunity,” Ms Agostino said.
“I’m proud to work alongside our elected council and dedicated staff to build on the strong foundations already in place.
“Together, we’ll continue working to improve the lives of our residents, strengthen our townships and deliver the infrastructure and services our community needs now and into the future.
“It’s a privilege to lead an organisation with such passionate and skilled people.
“I’m committed to ensuring our culture, systems and service delivery continue to evolve and meet the high expectations of our community.”
Ms Agostino will formally start as CEO this month.
