Flood victims encouraged to seek mental health support

The Victorian Government is encouraging regional Victorians to prioritise their mental health and seek help if needed after the second flooding event in just over a year.

Victorian Mental Health Minister Ingrid Stitt said a range of free resources were available to offer support for those who needed it.

Mental health and wellbeing services, or ‘locals’, are available in-person and via telehealth.

The Shepparton Mental Health and Wellbeing Local, which services Greater Shepparton, Strathbogie and Moira shires, can be accessed via 1300 000 559.

The ‘locals’ act as a ‘front door’ to the mental health system, providing a mix of supports and therapies for individuals needing mental health support. This service is available to anyone aged over 26 for free and without a GP referral.

For youth, there is also a headspace centre in Shepparton, located at 129 High St, Shepparton and contactable at 5823 8800.

For parents and carers seeking help for children up to 11 years old, the Bendigo Children’s Health and Wellbeing Local provides free support and is available on 1800 433 977.

In addition to localised support, people can also access free statewide telehealth support options, including Rural Health Connect online at ruralhealthconnect.com.au and Partners in Wellbeing for people aged over 16 on 1300 375 330.

In an emergency where there is an immediate risk of harm to a person, call 000, or for free 24-hour crisis support, call Lifeline at 13 11 14.
